Digitization of Chinese characters
A multimedia and electromechanical exhibit revealing how Chinese characters are encoded, entered, stored, typeset and shared across digital networks.

THE IDEA
Written characters must be represented as codes before computers can store, process and transmit them. The GB2312 standard provided a shared encoding system for Chinese text, while laser phototypesetting enabled efficient digital composition and printing.
THE INTERACTION
A touchscreen, pin-screen device, three-dimensional movable-type blocks, microphone and replica manuscript connect physical writing and printing with digital input, encoding and display.
WHAT VISITORS DISCOVER
Follow the transformation of a written symbol into machine-readable information and understand why common standards matter for global communication and cultural preservation.
